Azienda Agricola Boasso, Barbera d'Alba Superiore, 2024
“Superiore” may be added if the wine is aged for a year prior to release, of which at least four months must be in barrel: here the wine goes into traditional large Slavonian oak vats for a year. Arguably this is the best value wine in the Boasso cellar. 2024 was a cool vintage and Claudio says this reminds him of the Barberas that he grew up drinking twenty years ago. Medium-bodied but full of plum and blackberry flavours. Generous and hearty but not over-ripe with well-covered tannins....

Azienda Agricola Boasso
Serralunga, Italy
The Boasso family’s cellar, in the tiny hamlet of Gabutti, lies just above the steep slope of their top vineyard, facing the little hilltop village of Serralunga across a deep valley.
The cellar is tiny but spotless and perfectly equipped. Nebbiolos from Serralunga have a famed reputation for quality, but also for firm tannins: these Barolos can be...

Le Tende, Bardolino Classico, 2025
This has quickly become a firm favourite with both customers and the SVS team. Made from 80% Corvina and 20% Rondinella, organically grown on the banks of Lake Garda, it is a brilliant summer red. The 2025 leaps out of the glass with cherry and wild strawberry aromas backed up by a delightful floral note. The palate is light and juicy with more strawberry fruit and hints of raspberry coulis. Very fresh and bright with just enough tannin to give the all important structure and depth. Try it...

2/3 Corvina and 1/3 Rondinella, crafted in the Ripasso style by which the wine is left on the skins of the desiccated grapes used after the production of Amarone for about 10-12 days to promote a second fermentation, giving enhanced texture and alcohol. Fleshy and ripe, red-fruited, well-textured, with hints of tobacco and woodsmoke. La Cengia is the name of the subzone of Valpolicella where the vineyard for this wine lies. Now-2030

Begali
San Pietro in Cariano, Veneto, Italy
The Begali family - father Lorenzo, son Giordano and daughter Tiliana - farm 10 hectares just east of Lake Garda.
Although small, this is a top Valpolicella estate, having won numerous Tre Bicchieri awards in the Gambero Rosso guide. Furthermore Begali are one of the thirteen "Famiglie Storiche", historic familes of Amarone, an...

Fiorano, I Paoli Sangiovese, Marche IGT, 2024
Named after the owners/winemakers Paolo and Paola, this has become one of our most popular reds, which would appeal to all who enjoy a juicy and graceful style - for example Beaujolais lovers. About 10% has whole bunch fermentation and it's given five or six days maceration on the skins. This smells and tastes of crushed red fruit - strawberries and raspberries. Vibrant, with just the merest hint of tannin, it can be enjoyed on its own or with any Italian food, from pizza to the...

We started working with Paolo Beretta (formerly a dentist) and Paola Massi (a research pharmacologist) in 2015, with immediate success.
Their wines exemplify perfectly the virtues of small-scale - they tend just 10 hectares of vines - organic cultivation. All exhibit an entrancing purity of fruit, and all are bottled with...

Talosa, Rosso di Montepulciano, 2024
85% Sangiovese, 10% Canaiolo and 5% Merlot, given eight months in old Slavonian vats: generous, offering Sangiovese cherry and dark berry flavours with plenty of texture and supple tannic underpinning. Fruit returns on the finish. Now-2029
We have been working with the family owned Talosa estate since 2012: they may not be the grandest address in Montepulciano (although their cellars are spectacular, hollowed out of the rock, and including an Etruscan shrine), but their wines...

Michele Biancardi, Anima di Nero, Nero di Troia, IGT Puglia, 2021
Last time we shipped this wine, it received a fabulous review from the press and sold out quickly. We are very happy to have it back. Nero di Troia is the most important red grape in the northern part of Puglia and makes more structured serious wines than those found further south. Aged in large oak barrels, this is warming, spicy and dark-fruited with notes of sun-baked earth and mountain thyme alongside the mulberries and wild plums. A robust red for red meats and hard...
