Contino Blanco CNVE, Rioja, 2022

A blend of Garnacha Blanca and Viura from specially selected vineyards. The soils are alluvial and limestone based and the grapes that go into this wine are had selected and hand harvested. The vines that make this wine were planted in 1980 and are fermented in a mixture of oak barrels and concrete eggs. There is pleasing weight and depth to the fruit here, with stone fruit and citrus being apparent. There is also a pleasing spice note which adds complexity. This is a gastronomic wine. Now – 2028

"Predominantly Viura, with a small proportion (around 10–15%) of Garnacha Blanca. Short skin contact for a few hours. Ageing is carried out using a combination of new and used 500-litre barrels, with one-third of the wine matured in concrete, without wood. 15,300 bottles produced.
Pronounced notes of quince and chamomile, with an elegant touch of creaminess. The palate is very smooth, gently creamy, supported by chalky acidity that gives definition and drive. The ageing is handled with great sensitivity, and the use of concrete works particularly well here, adding depth and sharpening the overall profile. The wine stretches out with elegance, finishing on a subtle saline note that enhances its finesse. Still young, but with significant potential to evolve beautifully in bottle." 17+, Ferran Centelles, jancisrobinson.com, 6th September 2025

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
