Pinotage & Grenache Noir
Pinotage - South Africa’s unique red grape – the lovechild of Pinot Noir and Cinsault – recently celebrated its 100th birthday and the quality is improving all the time. It is definitely a grape variety to watch. Meanwhile, Rhône varietals have thrived in the Cape over the last decade or so, driven by the ‘Swartland Revolution’ when a bunch of (then) young and up-and-coming winemakers burst on to the scene. Many of these winemakers source their Grenache from Piekenierskloof, who were the first estate to plant this grape back in 1973. The estate's own example here shows why their fruit is in such high demand.
