La Combe Saint Paul, Gres Rouges, La Clape, 2021

Named after the vineyard soils derived from grés rouges (red sandstone); 60% Syrah with 20% each of Mourvèdre and Grenache, basically unoaked (10% in old barrels). This shows an unusual depth of flavour and intensity for a wine at this price. Glow of youthful purple. Enticing autumn compôte aromas. Smooth, mid weight and bursting with blackberry and blueberry notes. Subtle fruit tannins. A super wine at a modest price which one could profitably lay down. Now-2027

Languedoc-Roussillon

There’s something very complete about our annual offer of wines from the Languedoc and Roussillon: with whites, rosés and reds, and wonderful fortified wines, the Vins Doux Naturels which are such a speciality of the region, there should be something for all tastes. Secondly, there are wines for every budget; at every level we believe these wines continue to offer terrific...

Grenache / Garnacha

Grenache grows well in hot, dry regions, though it can develop very high (15 degrees+) alcohol.

As such it is grown principally in Southern France and Spain (as Garnacha). It is usually blended with other varieties in the Southern Rhône and Languedoc (Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, Cinsaut and others).

Its flavour usually encompasses the...

L'Estabel, Cabrieres Rouge, Fulcrand Cabanon, 2022

A blend of Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault grown on Schistes soil at 120 meters above sea level. This has all been vinified in stainless steel. This is a vibrant melange of red fruit. Soaring raspberry and wild strawberry dominate with a balancing lick of tannin. Now-2026

Domaine du Grand Arc, Corbieres Rouge, Reserve Grand Arc, 2022

A blend of 50% Carignan, 35% Grenache Noir and 15% Mourvèdre. From the Schenk family this has been aged in barrel, 20% new. Dense and full-flavoured, this is a serious wine for the money and could keep well if you have the patience. Dark fruit and garrigue tinged with oak. Impressive.  Now-2028

Domaine du Grand Arc

Corbieres, France

Nicolas Schenk is now running the family estate created by his father Bruno. Bruno Schenk is still a legend here at SVS.

He was an engineer in Alsace before he came to buy vineyards in the Corbieres in 1995. At first he sent his grapes to the co-operative, but after one frost affected year he decided he had to come out and bottle his own wines to...

Carignan

Carignan is the grape which really distinguishes the red wines of the Languedoc and Roussillon from those of the southern Rhône (in the latter Grenache is ubiquitous and dominant, and Syrah and Mourvèdre are the preferred blending grapes).

It has been a much maligned grape. For example Jancis Robinson’s Oxford Companion to Wine thunders: "Carignan,...

Domaine Fontanel, Hominus Sapanius, IGP Cotes Catalanes, Rouge 2021

From young vines of Syrah and Grenache, plus a little Mourvédre, grown in hot, dry and windy mountain vineyards near Tautavel (so it could actually be labelled as Côte du Roussillon Villages). This is a terrific introduction to the classic Roussillon style: it has great depth of colour; cherry and herbal aromas with a roasted note; and delivers a lively gush of black cherry and brambly fruit. So much character, with just the slightest buzz of tannins. Will drink superbly with a barbecue...

Domaine Fontanel

Tautavel, France

Things have changed at Domaine Fontanel, but with a sense of continuity. Elodie and Matthieu Collet bought the domaine from Pierre and Marie-Claude Fontaneil in 2017 and have already made a name for themselves, being elected no less than Vignerons de l'Année (Roussillon) du Guide Hachette 2019.

After both graduating as agricultural...

Chateau de la Liquiere, Faugeres, Amandiers Rouge, 2021

An unoaked blend of half Syrah with 20% of Grenache and Carignan and 10% Mourvèdre. Fascinating, extravagant scent of red grapes grown on schist. Forward, luscious red fruit. Open and stimulating, it’s a great introduction to the reds at this top Faugères estate. Now-2025
Simon's choice of what to drink at home: "Wines from grapes grown on pure schist, a metamorphic rock, often display a distinctive, high-toned scent and taste, and it’s most apparent in unoaked wines...

Mas d'Agamas, Terrasses du Larzac, Nostre Mescladis, 2021

Nostre Mescladis translates as “our blend”: from Grenache, Carignan, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsaut, approximately in proportion to the grape varieties in the Visseq family’s vineyards. Unoaked, it’s aged in concrete, which adds a wonderful textured element to it. A huge hit of garrigue on the nose with bramble fruit and slight note of pepper. This is very classy and packed full of fruit.  Vincent Visseq has produced another superb vintage. Now-2026

Mas d'Agamas

Mas d'Agamas

Young Vincent Visseq studied winemaking in Montpellier and went on to work at Chateau Capion, a grand estate near Mas du Daumas Gassac.

As with many young French winemakers, he also chose to broaden his experience in Australia, where he was able to vinify one vintage in the Goulburn Valley, working with Marsanne and Syrah in particular.

In 2009 he...

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
