Corte Mainente, Soave, Vigna Cengelle, 2025

Garganega with a little Trebbiano di Soave. From vineyards near the cellar with clay-limestone soils at the foot of the Classico zone. Very zesty and bright with something almost tropical alongside the more typical lemon and apple notes. Refreshing and deliciously uncomplicated. Always a staff favourite. Now-2027
In 2019 we found a winner to work with in Soave in the shape of young Davide Mainente. His family own 12 hectares of vines, both near the town (the Cengelle vineyard) and...

Corte Mainente

Soave, Italy

We have chosen a winner to work with in Soave with young Davide Mainente.

His family own 12 hectares of vines, both near the town (the Cengelle vineyard) and in the Classico hillside sites such as Pigno and Tenda.

His wines are winning rave reviews in Italy and here (Jancis Robinson described his 2017 Cengelle on jancisrobinson.com as "Chock-full of...

Garganega

Garganega is a white grape variety grown widely in the Veneto region of North East Italy where it is most famous for the production of Soave.

Though it can be inoffensively neutral, it has a distinct pea-pod character, and can deliver considerable weight and character.

Le Tende, Custoza, 2025

Despite having its DOC since 1971, Custoza has long been in the shadow of wines such as Soave and Gavi, but deserves much better recognition – especially when made this well. A blend of Garganega, Tocai (aka Trebbianello) and Cortese, this is bright and lifted with lemons, green apples, citrus and a subtle herbal note that makes it a fine choice to pair with simply cooked white fish. Guardia dei Mori, Vermentino, Terre Siciliane, 2025

One of our best value Italian whites. Pear and honeysuckle aromas; followed by a fresh, lightly herby mouthful with impressive concentration for a wine at this price. Try it with a courgette (or should we say zucchini?) and lemon pasta dish. Now-2027

Borgo Paglianetto, Terravignata, Marche Rosso, 2024

"Sangiovese for structure, Merlot for rounded fruit, and Lacrima for aromatics" according to Marco Vecchioli at the estate. The actual blend is 50% Sangiovese, 35% Merlot and 15% Lacrima, and it is just the the type of fresh Italian red we love. Lacrima is intensely aromatic, think fragrant rose petals and violets - and the 15% brings a joyful lift and vivacity to the juicy red berry Merlot and crunchy cherry-like Sangiovese. Now-2028
We first visited Borgo Paglianetto...

Le Lupinaie, Morellino di Scansano, 2024

It's not just English people who long to live on a farm in Tuscany - in 1991  Aldo Galimberti, tired of living in Florence, realised the same dream, buying an old farmhouse near Montiano in the heart of the Maremma. Now his family farm 25 hectares of vines on rolling hills just inland from the Tuscan coast.
We also ship the family's delicious Ciliegiolo, but their principal wine is their Morellino (= Sangiovese) di Scansano (a town just south-east of Grosseto).  Sangiovese...

Part of this wine is aged in large, older barrels, just rounding it out. Crushed strawberry scent. Ripe and spicy. Uncomplicated but authentic, equally good for a plate of pasta or a Margherita pizza. Now-2028

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
