Aromo, Carmenere, Maule, 2022

Carmenere is Chile’s point of difference when it comes to reds and we have missed having one for the last few months. This is a very good example: straightforward, unoaked and fruit-forward with a slight herbaceous, green pepper edge to the blackberry and dark cherry fruit. Smooth but full of character. Now-2027

La Croisade, Pinot Noir, IGP Pays d'Oc, 2025

Slow cooked rabbit with a sauce enriched with bacon and mustard was Gareth’s grandfather’s favourite. He’d have probably washed it down with a pint of bitter but this juicy, fruity Pinot from the south of France would be more traditional across the channel. Poached strawberries, red cherries and just a hint of chocolate. Bistro wine for bistro cooking. Now-2027

Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Francis a parent of Cabernet Sauvignon.

A cross of it with Sauvignon Blanc resulted in Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Franc tends to be softer and has less tannins than Cabernet Sauvignon, although the two can be difficult to distinguish. Many of the red wines of the Loire are primarily Cabernet Franc.

Jancis Robinson

We get super excited when Jancis Robinson (or one of her team) write about our wine!

Voted the world's most influential wine critic in polls in the US, France and internationally in 2018, Jancis views herself as a wine writer rather than a wine critic.

She writes daily for JancisRobinson.com and weekly for the Financial Times. She is founder-editor of The Oxford Companion...

Chateau Barrejat, Madiran, Tradition, 2024

Game pie is often a dish greater than the sum of its parts, but even the best examples have a charming rusticity. It demands a robust country red such as Denis Capmartin’s Madiran which will need no introduction to most SVS customers. The 2024, which hails from a cooler vintage than the preceding 2022, has a new modern label and is a little lighter in style, but it still has plenty of spicy damson and cassis fruit and ripe, food-friendly tannins. 12.5%. Eight Gates, Cinsault, Breedekloof, 2024

This is from a four hectare plot on Carlo’s home farm in Breedekloof. 50% whole bunch fermentation, aged for nine months in oak barrels of varied ages and sizes. Slightly darker and more full-bodied than the Cecilia Cinsault, it has bramble, dark cherry and violet fruit alongside notes of dried wild herbs – the locals would term this ‘fynbos’ and it is similar to the ‘garrigue’ notes of the Languedoc. A serious Cinsault that will take on venison or other game beautifully. 13%. No...

A blend of three varieties grown in a single 4.5 hectare plot, organically cultivated since 1996, 60% Grenache and 20% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, fermented in concrete. “Vin Biologique et Nature” it says on the back label, emphasising Philippe Cartoux’s commitment to organics and reducing sulphur in his wines.
