Domaine des Espiers, Cotes du Rhone, 2023
A blend of three varieties grown in a single 4.5 hectare plot, organically cultivated since 1996, 60% Grenache and 20% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, fermented in concrete. “Vin Biologique et Nature” it says on the back label, emphasising Philippe Cartoux’s commitment to organics and reducing sulphur in his wines. This has a lustrous, ruby red hue; offers a scent of crushed red fruit and roses; and then delivers a joyous and juicy mouthful of raspberry, mulberry and damson flavours. This just flowers on the palate - and the finish is attractively peppery. There’s an energetic freshness and bite to this which is stimulating even on a hot day (and by all means give it 20 minutes in the fridge). It would pair brilliantly with any meat on the barbecue. Philippe’s Côtes du Rhône was being poured at Roland Garros during the French Open tennis in June - drink like a VIP! Now-2028
