Inospito,Vinhas Velhas Almendra, Vinho Tinto, DOP Douro, 2022

"Full bottle 1,337 g. From an old vineyard, a field blend of more than 42 varieties planted in 1850, at 200–250 m. Hand-picked. Three days' maceration before spontaneous fermentation began. Aged in new and used French oak barrels. 3,660 bottles produced. High acidity ram-packed into masses of dark-red, burly, sassy fruit – crunch and velvet, crackle and silk. Full of integrity and character, mouth-watering sapidity, damson deliciousness. 17/20, Drink 2025-2030”. Tamlyn Currin, jancisrobinson.com, 17th January 2025

Just 3660 bottles, from a single vineyard planted in 1850 (so pre-phylloxera) including over 42 recorded varieties. The soil is schist, and the vineyard is at 250 meters above sea level. After being hand harvested the grapes are aged for 18 months in a combination of 225 litre and 500 litre new and old French oak barrels. This ancient field blend exemplifies everything that is great about Douro reds, both aromatic and intense. Crushed lavender, rose petal and raspberry hit you out of the glass. The palate is velvety and full of red and dark fruit, sharp blackcurrant, cherry and just a little black pepper. These notes are long and sustaining, with the tannins sitting comfortably in the background supporting this symphony. A wine for instant enjoyment but that will develop gracefully over the coming decade. Perfect to drink with any type of game. Just superb. Now-2028

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
