Domaine de Cazaban, Parti Pris, IGP Pays d'Aude, 2021

Parti Pris translates as bias. OK, we are biased towards Pinot Noir here, with our shipments of Pinot ranging from Slovenia to the Yarra Valley, but that's not why we bought this. It's because it's a fascinating expression of the grape. From vineyards at over 200m. of altitude on the slopes of the Montagne Noire, aged all in old foudres (big barrels), it's fascinating. From its clear raspberry juice appearance to its floral aromatics and fresh and delicate flavours of...

Languedoc-Roussillon

There’s something very complete about our annual offer of wines from the Languedoc and Roussillon: with whites, rosés and reds, and wonderful fortified wines, the Vins Doux Naturels which are such a speciality of the region, there should be something for all tastes. Secondly, there are wines for every budget; at every level we believe these wines continue to offer terrific...

Domaine Fontanel, Côtes du Roussillon Villages Tautavel, Cistes, 2020

Named after Cistus, the rock rose which flowers in the spring. From halves of Grenache and Syrah, the latter aged in barrel, the former in tank. The 2018 vintage we offered last year was a huge hit, so much so we ran out of stock around Christmas. Inky. Hints of vanilla over luxuriant fruit. Mouthcoating concentration. Not in the least sweet or jammy but instead showing the juiciness of blackcurrants. Now-2027
"Hawthorn berries, cigar and masses of herbs. Quite taut and...

Domaine Fontanel

Tautavel, France

Things have changed at Domaine Fontanel, but with a sense of continuity. Elodie and Matthieu Collet bought the domaine from Pierre and Marie-Claude Fontaneil in 2017 and have already made a name for themselves, being elected no less than Vignerons de l'Année (Roussillon) du Guide Hachette 2019.

After both graduating as agricultural...

Grenache / Garnacha

Grenache / Garnacha

Grenache grows well in hot, dry regions, though it can develop very high (15 degrees+) alcohol.

As such it is grown principally in Southern France and Spain (as Garnacha). It is usually blended with other varieties in the Southern Rhône and Languedoc (Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, Cinsaut and others).

Its flavour usually encompasses the...

Chateau de la Liquiere, Faugeres, La Fabrique Rouge, 2021

A particular highlight of our Liquière tasting. A field blend based on Carignan, which has some Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault complanted with it. Harvested by hand and matured in concrete tanks. So pure and aromatic. Lavendar and red fruits dominate the nose with such pure fruit evident on the palate. This is an elegant expression of Faugères and one that is a pure delight to drink. Carignan

Carignan is the grape which really distinguishes the red wines of the Languedoc and Roussillon from those of the southern Rhône (in the latter Grenache is ubiquitous and dominant, and Syrah and Mourvèdre are the preferred blending grapes).

It has been a much maligned grape. For example Jancis Robinson’s Oxford Companion to Wine thunders: "Carignan,...

La Combe Saint Paul, L'Insoupconne, Languedoc-La Clape, 2021

Grown on clay-limestone soils in La Clape (a “heap of pepples” in the Occitan language, the old language of the Languedoc), a high rocky site near the Med south of Narbonne. 85% Syrah with Mourvèdre, given 10 months ageing in a mix of new and 2nd fill barrels - and a very limited production wine, just 2000 bottles in this vintage. As ever, very deep and opaque. Classic aromas of the hot south - black fruit with a hint of menthol.  Lovely sucrosité up front, and then dark, brambly black...

Shiraz / Syrah

Shiraz / Syrah

Powerful, black-fruited, often aged in oak, syrah/Shiraz comes in varying styles but at the top (such as Hermitage) can be spectacular and very long-lived.

There is no question that Syrah is now the most fashionable red grape for new plantings in many New World countries, especially South Africa and Chile.

Mas des Brousses, Terrasses du Larzac, 2020

Consistently the most elegant and ageworthy wine in our Languedoc portfolio; distinguished by the high proportion of Mourvèdre (about half, plus Syrah and Grenache). Seductive Mediterranean perfume of garrigue, autumnal fruit and vanilla oak. Super-smooth palate - this just melts in the  mouth - of blackberry tinged with bay leaf, menthol and liquorice. Velvety, already approachable, a sophisticated red which will keep for years. Now-2026

Mas des Brousses

Brousses translates as bush, or brush; this is, literally, the farm in the brush.

Amidst the rolling scrub-covered hills around Puéchabon and the pebble-strewn terrasses near the Hérault river lie the domaine’s plots of vines.

Tall Géraldine Combes (from a family who have inhabited Puéchabon, near Gignac, since 1525) juggles looking after...

Domaine de la Ribotte, Bandol Rouge, 2020

Red Bandol is usually backward, but this is already expressive, showing a nose of Asian spice on black fruit; with impressive, inky concentration, well-covered tannin and attractive savoury elements. A traditionally framed example, perfect to accompany robust meat dishes like venison or a local daube provençale. Now-2024
Bandol is an unusual appellation in the south as both rosés and reds need to be based on at least 50% Mourvèdre. This grape, by repute, likes to have its feet in...

Domaine de la Ribotte

Bandol, France

The Domaine de la Ribotte is a family affair. Maurice Desblache’s grandfather bought the domaine which is now run by Maurice’s wife Laurence, the first female winemaker in Bandol, and their son Nicolas.

I came across their rosé while judging gold medal winners at the Decanter World Wine Awards. When we traced the family we were surprised to...

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
