Shiraz / Syrah

Powerful, black-fruited, often aged in oak, syrah/Shiraz comes in varying styles but at the top (such as Hermitage) can be spectacular and very long-lived.

There is no question that Syrah is now the most fashionable red grape for new plantings in many New World countries, especially South Africa and Chile.

La Combe Saint Paul, L'Insoupconne, Languedoc-La Clape, 2021

Grown on clay-limestone soils in La Clape (a “heap of pepples” in the Occitan language, the old language of the Languedoc), a high rocky site near the Med south of Narbonne. 85% Syrah with Mourvèdre, given 10 months ageing in a mix of new and 2nd fill barrels - and a very limited production wine, just 2000 bottles in this vintage. As ever, very deep and opaque. Classic aromas of the hot south - black fruit with a hint of menthol.  Lovely sucrosité up front, and then dark, brambly black fruit is dominant. Tannins beautifully covered. With great suavity and length, this is quite classic and combines power and finesse. Now-2027

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
