Les Vignerons d’Estezargues, Cuvee des Galets, Cotes du Rhone, 2024
50% Grenache and 50% Syrah. This is a paint-by-numbers Côtes du Rhône that works every time. We are very pleased with the 2024 vintage - dry but juicy raspberry fruit with notes of Christmas spices and a smooth finish. An excellent all-rounder that works for barbecues, parties or with top-quality sausage and mash. Great value. Now-2028
This is the 20th consecutive vintage we have shipped of this deliciously fruity Côtes du Rhône, from this unfailingly reliable co-operative of...

Les Vignerons d’Estézargues
Rhone, France
This small co-operative, in a little village in the Gard, just west of Avignon, is now getting more attention here because oenologist Denis Deschamps makes "natural" wines, i.e. without adding any sulphur (or anything else) during winemaking.
We find this mildly amusing: we have been quietly shipping decent volumes of these delicious, forward-fruited,...

Grenache / Garnacha
Grenache grows well in hot, dry regions, though it can develop very high (15 degrees+) alcohol.
As such it is grown principally in Southern France and Spain (as Garnacha). It is usually blended with other varieties in the Southern Rhône and Languedoc (Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, Cinsaut and others).
Its flavour usually encompasses the...

Amadieu, Cotes du Rhone Villages, 2025
From plots near Cairanne and Rasteau. About 70% Grenache with 30% Syrah, all in tank, from vines farmed (and certified) bio-dynamically. Red fruit and a little spice on the nose. Very pure and bright with juicy raspberries on the palate, whilst maintaining a savoury edge. Brilliant for the price. 14%. Now-2029
An agronomist by training, Yves Jean Houser bought a cellar on the edge of the town of Cairanne and just eight hectares of vines. He swiftly converted to bio-dynamic farming...

Amadieu, Cairanne, Vieilles Vignes, 2024
This, from vineyards near to the cellar in Cairanne, has been a benchmark wine here ever since the 2003 vintage. A blend of about 40% Grenache from 60 year old vines with Syrah, Mourvèdre and Carignan, it’s darker-fruited and much more intense than most southern Rhônes. Deep and spicy - a few twists of the black pepper mill; vibrant and energetic with very fine tannins and an impressively long finish. 14%. Now-2032

Domaine des Espiers, Cotes du Rhone, 2023
A blend of three varieties grown in a single 4.5 hectare plot, organically cultivated since 1996, 60% Grenache and 20% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, fermented in concrete. “Vin Biologique et Nature” it says on the back label, emphasising Philippe Cartoux’s commitment to organics and reducing sulphur in his wines. This has a lustrous, ruby red hue; offers a scent of crushed red fruit and roses; and then delivers a joyous and juicy mouthful of raspberry, mulberry and damson flavours....

Domaine des Garriguettes, Cotes du Rhone Rouge, Le Beret Bleu, 2024
The 100% Cinsault 2024 Le Beret Bleu is Sebastien’s homage to the wines of his grandfather Jean, who appears on the label. Very pure on the nose with pretty, perfumed raspberry fruit alongside some floral violet notes. The twinkle-toed palate follows through with just crushed bilberry and damson galore. There is just enough tannin to frame the fruit and add the necessary backbone. The 12% alcohol is remarkably low for this part of France too. Perfect with charcuterie or simply roasted...

Domaine des Garriguettes, Cotes du Rhone Rouge, Tradition, 2025
We have been out of stock of this wine for too long – we heard the complaints! 50% Grenache, 25% Mourvèdre and 25% Syrah, it displays a vibrant and youthful purple robe and delectably lush fruit, chock full of ripe cherries and raspberries. Fresh, pure and juicy but plenty of substance too. Fill your boots. Now-2029
A classic and superior southern Rhône, from bio-dynamically farmed (and certified) vines around Gadagne, south-east of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Made from a blend of 50%...
