Aromo, Viognier, Maule, 2025

This is our favourite of the Aromo whites. Viognier has been grown successfully in Chile for many years now offering a real point of difference to the ubiquitous Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. This is a fruity, expressive white with peach, apricot and orange blossom notes enlivened with a squeeze of fresh lemon. Very good with a Thai green curry. Now-2027

Viognier

Characteristics

  • Fickle grape to grow, subject to problems in the flowering and setting of fruit
  • Best picked late and fully ripe, with high alcohol, at least 13.5 degree
  • ...but can be too fat and overblown if grown in too hot temperatures

Goedverwacht, Great Expectations, Chardonnay, Robertson, 2025

We always ship this lightly oaked Chardonnay a vintage behind the other Goedverwacht whites to let the fruit and oak marry in bottle. The 2025 vintage is drinking very well now. The lemon and peach on the nose follow through on to the palate where they are joined by a subtle hint of creamy vanilla. It definitely leans to the fresher style of Cape Chardonnays but that extra element of richness makes it a great partner for chicken or pork. Now-2028

Goedverwacht, Robertson

Goedverwacht translates from Afrikaans as good hope  or great expectations, hence the labelling. The du Toit family farm no less than 172 hectares of vines giving economies of scale along the bends of the Breede river near Bonnievale. The wines are made by father Jan in collaboration with son Gawie.

Jan once firmly stated his place in the world of wine in South Africa: "I...

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Les Roches Saintes, Picpoul de Pinet, 2025

Picpoul de Pinet is a fashionable appellation south-west of Montpellier, there (and in Parisian bistros) it’s drunk with the local oysters and other shellfish from the Bassin de Thau, the large, shallow lagoon that lies within sight of the vineyards. This example, from superior vineyards just a few kilometres inland, is a Picpoul straight out of Central Casting – all pink grapefruit and lemon with a pinch of fleur de sel. Mid-weight and food friendly, it ticks all the boxes. Now-2027

Languedoc-Roussillon

There’s something very complete about our annual offer of wines from the Languedoc and Roussillon: with whites, rosés and reds, and wonderful fortified wines, the Vins Doux Naturels which are such a speciality of the region, there should be something for all tastes. Secondly, there are wines for every budget; at every level we believe these wines continue to offer terrific...

Arena Negra, Pinot Noir, Curico, 2023

We are always looking out for good, sub-£10 Pinot Noir and were delighted with this find. Pure fruit, no oak, with lots of varietal character: punnets and punnets of soft strawberry and raspberry fruit with a fresh, juicy character and just enough tannin to keep it all together. We expect this to be very popular. Now-2027

Chateau Barrejat, Madiran, Tradition, 2024

Game pie is often a dish greater than the sum of its parts, but even the best examples have a charming rusticity. It demands a robust country red such as Denis Capmartin’s Madiran which will need no introduction to most SVS customers. The 2024, which hails from a cooler vintage than the preceding 2022, has a new modern label and is a little lighter in style, but it still has plenty of spicy damson and cassis fruit and ripe, food-friendly tannins. 12.5%. Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Francis a parent of Cabernet Sauvignon.

A cross of it with Sauvignon Blanc resulted in Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Franc tends to be softer and has less tannins than Cabernet Sauvignon, although the two can be difficult to distinguish. Many of the red wines of the Loire are primarily Cabernet Franc.

Les Vignerons d’Estezargues, Cuvee des Galets, Cotes du Rhone, 2024

50% Grenache and 50% Syrah. This is a paint-by-numbers Côtes du Rhône that works every time. We are very pleased with the 2024 vintage - dry but juicy raspberry fruit with notes of Christmas spices and a smooth finish. An excellent all-rounder that works for barbecues, parties or with top-quality sausage and mash. Great value. Now-2028

Les Vignerons d’Estézargues

Rhone, France

This small co-operative, in a little village in the Gard, just west of Avignon, is now getting more attention here because oenologist Denis Deschamps makes "natural" wines, i.e. without adding any sulphur (or anything else) during winemaking.

We find this mildly amusing: we have been quietly shipping decent volumes of these delicious, forward-fruited,...

Grenache / Garnacha

Grenache / Garnacha

Grenache grows well in hot, dry regions, though it can develop very high (15 degrees+) alcohol.

As such it is grown principally in Southern France and Spain (as Garnacha). It is usually blended with other varieties in the Southern Rhône and Languedoc (Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, Cinsaut and others).

Its flavour usually encompasses the...
