Compagniesdrift, Chardonnay, Western Cape, 2024
Made by Meerlust winemaker Altus Treurnicht, this is a juicy, fruit-forward, unoaked Chardonnay that offers immediate pleasure. White pears and apricot fruit with zesty lemon on the finish. Uncomplicated – in a good way – and very drinkable. A wine for simple, summery suppers. 13%. Now-2027
However beautiful the Cape winelands are one is never too far away from a reminder of the economic and social realities of modern South Africa, which makes businesses like the community-owned...

Chardonnay
Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.
Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Goedverwacht Great Expectations, Chenin Blanc, Robertson, 2025
From the Du Toit family in Robertson whose Goedverwacht estate translates loosely as 'Great Expectations'. 2025 is a superb vintage in the Cape and this is a forward, zesty Chenin Blanc with notes of white peach and green apple. No oak - just refreshing, bright fruit all the way through. Very good on its own or with lighter pasta and seafood dishes. Now-2027

Cape Atlantic Sauvignon Blanc, Western Cape, 2025
About two thirds from the young Sauvignon parcels at high altitude Cederberg, plus a third from the Ghost Corner vineyards at Elim near the southernmost tip of Africa in the Agulhas Wine Triangle. Elderflower perfume. Juicy citrus flavours with an underlying note of nettle. A vibrant and precise Sauvignon with a definite stony finish. Now – 2027

Piekenierskloof, Grenache Noir, 2023
Piekenierskloof has more Grenache planted than any other estate in the Cape – that’s why so many of the young gun winemakers buy their Grenache here. We reckon going direct to the source delivers better value. From vines averaging over 25 years old, but incorporating parcels going back to 1973; all into old, effectively neutral, oak. Soft red hue. Cherry-scented, dusted with vanilla. Luscious raspberry and red cherry fruit. So expansive – just flowers on the palate. Perfect fresh...

Piekenierskloof
For years I had been hearing about Piekenierskloof – not as a wine producer but as a source of grapes for numerous other winemakers, young and old. I didn’t realise that Piekenierskloof wasn’t just a ward (the smallest geographical unit in the South African regional classification) but one large estate, formerly a co-operative but now owned... Grenache / Garnacha
Grenache / Garnacha
Grenache grows well in hot, dry regions, though it can develop very high (15 degrees+) alcohol.
As such it is grown principally in Southern France and Spain (as Garnacha). It is usually blended with other varieties in the Southern Rhône and Languedoc (Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, Cinsaut and others).
Its flavour usually encompasses the...

Pinotage
Pinotage: a living national treasure or "the only grape variety which is carcinogenic"?
Pinotage is the one original South African grape, developed by Abraham Perold in Stellenbosch in 1925 by crossing Pinot Noir and Cinsault, then known as Hermitage.
It has the acidity of the former parent and the warm generosity of the latter. South Africans can’t make up...

Blaauwklippen Estate Merlot, Stellenbosch, 2024
It has been a while since we had a varietal Merlot in the list but this one made the grade when we did our final selection – perhaps because it actually contains 15% Petit Verdot which adds depth and complexity. Aged for 18 months in old (3rd fill) oak barrels to soften the tannins without dominating the ripe, juicy damson and mulberry fruit. Will be a fine match for beef. Now-2029.
The name Blaauwklippen translates as ‘Blue Stones’ in honour of the granite outcrops in the...
