Shiraz / Syrah

Shiraz / Syrah

Powerful, black-fruited, often aged in oak, syrah/Shiraz comes in varying styles but at the top (such as Hermitage) can be spectacular and very long-lived.

There is no question that Syrah is now the most fashionable red grape for new plantings in many New World countries, especially South Africa and Chile.

Eight Gates, Syrah, Polkadraai Hills, 2024

This wine is made in miniscule quantities – just 54 18kg boxes of grapes were picked, all in one March morning. The vineyard itself – known as Jacob’s Ladder for its steep slopes- is on the Karibib Farm in the Polkadraai Hills Ward just outside Stellenbosch. The area is well known for its decomposed granite soils which are perfect for Syrah – just as they are in the Northern Rhone. Famous names such as Reyneke and Carinus source their Syrah here, as well as several young garagiste winemakers.

Still very primary in colour, it has a beautiful pure, floral nose that jumps out of the glass. It couldn’t be anything but Syrah. Medium-bodied on the palate it has fine tannins with layers of ripe red fruit (raspberry, Victoria plum), hints of lavender and twists of white pepper. Very much Syrah – not Shiraz – this is elegant and very refined. Very highly recommended. Now-2032

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
