Domaine Begude, Chardonnay, L'Etoile, Limoux, 2022

This is a star barrel-fermented Chardonnay, from very low yields - less than half those in Burgundy. It goes into 500 litre demi-muids, half new, and is fermented only with indigenous yeasts. This opens up with tropical fruits, but has plenty of nervous energy, great texture and splendid length. Will drink now but a Burgundy beater if you lay it down as it develops beautifully, with ripe citrus and buttery notes coming to the fore. Now-2028

Domaine Begude

Limoux

We have been shipping wines from James Kinglake since he left his life in the City in 2003 to buy the Domaine La Begude, about 350 metres up in the foothills of the Pyrenees near Limoux.

"I could not quite afford to buy in Burgundy so I chose the next best thing". But it hasn't always been an easy ride: he acknowledges how tough it is to be a farmer: his...

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Clos de L’Amandaie, AOP Languedoc, Amandaie Blanc, 2021

From Stéphanie and Philippe Peytavy of Aumelas. Certified organic. 80% Grenache Blanc, 20% Roussanne. 10 months’ unoaked ageing with some lees stirring. Broad and rich – for a richly sauced fish dish? Some herbal Roussanne influence evident, but so is the alcohol. Not an aperitif! A rich wine that is just the right side of heavy. 16/20 Drink 2022-2024 Jancis Robinson MW, May 2023
This is from numerous parcels planted on some of the Vidal family’s highest land about forty...

Chateau de la Liquiere, Faugeres Blanc, Cuvee Cistus, 2022

A blend of Roussanne, Vermentino and Grenache Blanc grown at altitude. The Roussanne is fermented and aged in 500l oak barrels. There is a wonderful richness to this wine. It is gastronomic and broad. Stone fruit, blossom and a pleasing honeyed note. A Grand Cru of the Languedoc? Serve with slow roasted chicken and mediterranean vegetables to see this wine at its best. Chateau de la Liquiere, Faugeres Rouge, 2021

The estate’s principal wine, an unoaked, life-enhancing blend of Grenache and Syrah with a little Carignan and Mourvèdre. Youthful, vibrant purple. A lively and concentrated blast of red berry and cherry fruit. Supple tannins. Transparent and expressive – a classic example, and François Vidal is right to praise its “freshness and elegance”. Perfect with a simply prepared steak. Now-2026

Carignan

Carignan is the grape which really distinguishes the red wines of the Languedoc and Roussillon from those of the southern Rhône (in the latter Grenache is ubiquitous and dominant, and Syrah and Mourvèdre are the preferred blending grapes).

It has been a much maligned grape. For example Jancis Robinson’s Oxford Companion to Wine thunders: "Carignan,...

Villa Orae, La Clape, Sillons, 2020

"Transparent crimson. Sweet start and lots of pleasure and saline interest already though with some tannic undertow. Good for now and the future! 16.5/20, Drink 2023-2028", Jancis Robinson MW,  jancisrobinson.com, May 2023.
"Smells of tinned strawberries, peppermint and prunes stewed in tea. In the mouth, it’s damson jam and white pepper on toast. The tannins have the delicate tug of cold-brew tea, and they’re wrapped in swathes of fine-gauze tea-soaked fruit...

Grenache / Garnacha

Grenache / Garnacha

Grenache grows well in hot, dry regions, though it can develop very high (15 degrees+) alcohol.

As such it is grown principally in Southern France and Spain (as Garnacha). It is usually blended with other varieties in the Southern Rhône and Languedoc (Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, Cinsaut and others).

Its flavour usually encompasses the...

Domaine Fontanel, Maury Sec, Arrels 2022

Arrels means “Roots” in the Catalan language. This is Elodie and Matthieu’s love letter to the historic Catalan associations of Roussillon. It’s a blend of 70% Grenache Noir and 30% Mourvèdre, grown on schist and aged only in stainless steel, allowing the terroir to speak clearly.  Ripe black cherry and raspberry dominate, allied to a balancing savoury quality and a lick of tannin to add structure. A brilliant and distinctively Roussillon red. Now-2027

Domaine Fontanel

Tautavel, France

Things have changed at Domaine Fontanel, but with a sense of continuity. Elodie and Matthieu Collet bought the domaine from Pierre and Marie-Claude Fontaneil in 2017 and have already made a name for themselves, being elected no less than Vignerons de l'Année (Roussillon) du Guide Hachette 2019.

After both graduating as agricultural...

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
