Domaine Begude

Limoux

We have been shipping wines from James Kinglake since he left his life in the City in 2003 to buy the Domaine La Begude, about 350 metres up in the foothills of the Pyrenees near Limoux.

"I could not quite afford to buy in Burgundy so I chose the next best thing". But it hasn't always been an easy ride: he acknowledges how tough it is to be a farmer: his...

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Domaine Begude, Chardonnay, L'Etoile, Limoux, 2022

This is a star barrel-fermented Chardonnay, from very low yields - less than half those in Burgundy. It goes into 500 litre demi-muids, half new, and is fermented only with indigenous yeasts. This opens up with tropical fruits, but has plenty of nervous energy, great texture and splendid length. Will drink now but a Burgundy beater if you lay it down as it develops beautifully, with ripe citrus and buttery notes coming to the fore. Now-2028

We have been shipping wines from James Kinglake since 2010, soon after he left his life in the City to buy the Château Haute Begude, about 350 metres up in the foothills of the Pyrenees near Limoux. It's been tough in recent years: damaging late frosts, mildew and summer heat and drought have wreaked havoc on his yields.

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
