Top 5 Best Sparkling Wines for Summer

Domaine J. Laurens, Blanquette de Limoux Brut, Le Moulin, NV

Elegantly made, using Champagne techniques, from 90% Mauzac, the traditional variety of Limoux, with 10% Chardonnay, grown in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Pale lemon with a fine mousse. Aromas of ripe pear and white flowers with the notes of warm nuts and cinnamon characteristic of Mauzac. Crisp and elegant citrus and stone fruit flavours meld seamlessly and lead to a finely focused finish. A perfectly refreshing aperitif. Now-2022

We have been recommending the sparkling wines of Domaine Laurens for years to customers who want attractive fizz with smart presentation without a Champagne price. Founded in the 1980s, the domaine blossomed with the arrival in 2002 of locally born Jacques Calvel who saw its potential, and an opportunity to return home. The fruit from 30 hectares is hand harvested and vinified in a new dedicated facility. The wines are aged for between 1 and 2 years before release. In addition to meticulous winemaking, the attention to detail extends to the stylish presentation; an often overlooked factor in choosing sparkling wines.

Drusian, Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore, Extra Dry, NV

This smartly presented bottle has established itself as a firm favourite with our customers. Deliciously sherberty, light, and with the merest hint of fruity ripeness, one can consume this charming example with alarming ease.

A wonderful, much praised Prosecco from a family owned producer with vineyards in the heart of the Valdobbiadene. This makes a perfect aperitif. Now-2022

Drusian, Rose Mari, Vino Spumante Rosato, Extra Dry, NV

From Pinot Noir grown in the cool hills of Alto Adige and made in the same way as Prosecco (i.e. in a closed tank). A gently fizzy, very pale pink glass of red fruit - wild strawberries. Very lightly savoury, this makes a perfect aperitif, and a bottle vanishes very quickly indeed. Lovely before lunch as well as dinner! Perfect in the garden this summer. Now-2022

Clotilde Davenne, Cremant de Bourgogne, Extra Brut, France, NV

Our latest discovery - Clotilde's cellar in Prehy was visited on 19th October - a superb zero dosage Cremant: 60% from Chardonnay and 40% from Pinot Noir (planted in 1973), both off Kimmeridgian soils west of Chablis; and based on the 2018 vintage.

Some yeastiness on the nose; and fine mousse. Classical, super-clean example, wholly dry and lightly chalky. This makes a refreshing aperitif - or would be brilliant with fish and chips. Now-2024

Apaltagua, Costero, Extra Brut, San Antonio, Chile, NV

60% Chardonnay, 40% Sauvignon Blanc, from cool, coastal fruit with a secondary fermentation in bottle.

As described by its maker, Carolina França, "Apaltagua Costero is pale gold in color, with fine bubbles. On the nose it is clean with marked notes of white fruits, such as green and yellow apples. Clear notes of crusty bread and hazelnuts mix with a delicate hint of buttery aromas. In the mouth it is creamy with subtle flavors of green fruit and dry fruits and a long and lingering finish."

Appley, nutty, with a gentle savouriness. Classy Chilean fizz. Now-2023
