Chardonnay
Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.
Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Domaine Hugo, Hugo, Single Vineyard Brut Nature, NV
Hugo Stewart has to be one of the most experienced hands among English wine producers. Over twenty years ago he established Les Clos Perdus, a domaine which was a pioneer of bio-dynamic viticulture in the Corbiéres. Returning to his family farm on chalk downland in Wiltshire, he was determined to carry on farming with bio-dynamics (certified) and his vines always look conspicuously healthy.
“Domaine Hugo is one of a handful of seriously impressive wineries to emerge from Wiltshire in recent years. The organically and biodynamically certified vineyard was planted on chalk in 2016 by Hugo Stewart on his family farm, and the wine is made on site by the talented Daniel Ham of Offbeat Wines. This MV [multi vintage] blend is based on the 2022 vintage with 30% of 2021 and 5% of 2020. The base wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation in old Burgundy barrels and amphorae, and there’s no filtering or fining, and no added dosage.
Susie Barrie MW: Mid-gold. Spiced bread and bruised red apple. Loads of character and an artisanal feel. Very dry but it can take it. A lovely expression.
Matt Hodgson: Deep, nutty croissant aromas, a hint of smokiness, fruit more subtle on the nose. Brazil nut and bruised apple.
Dror Nativ MW: Expressive patisserie nose leads to an evolved palate of grilled almond and mushroom, with a creamy, satisfying finish.” 95/100, Decanter. Now-2029
