Cherrier Père et fils, Sancerre, 2025
2025 was a warm year in the Loire and this is a powerful, intense Sancerre that requires food. Concentrated red apple, lemon and lime fruit with a stony mineral backbone. Very fine with an impressively long finish. One for meaty white fish: Dover sole, turbot or brill. Now-2029.

Loire Valley
In early February I undertook our annual visit to the wine fair in Angers, escaping the snow which engulfed much of the UK during that week.
This is the yearly opportunity for the vast majority of vignerons in the Loire valley to show off their latest offerings to the rest of the world. The early season’s weather in 2008 was not kind, with variously frost, hail and torrential...

Moraima, Albariño Sobre Lias, Rías Baixas, 2025
concentrated Albariño that shows how impressive this grape can be when sourced from low yielding old vines and given extended lees ageing (sobre lias means ‘on the lees’). Many of the vines are over a hundred years old and pre-date phylloxera. The resulting wine is ripe and textured with vivid peach, apricot, and Amalfi lemon notes. Prepare a plate of Pulpo a la Gallega and enjoy. 13%. Now-2028

Domaine de la Ribotte, Bandol Rose, Cuvee Anais, 2025
Ribotte is a tiny but highly rated estate run by mother Laurence (the first female winemaker in Bandol) and her son Nicolas. From inland, terraced vineyards, based on the characterful Mourvèdre grape, their top wine is a serious, gastronomic rosé that is perfect with Provençal food. Peach and redcurrant flavours with a savoury edge. Long, perfumed finish. 13.5%. Now-2028

Domaine de la Ribotte
Bandol, France
The Domaine de la Ribotte is a family affair. Maurice Desblache’s grandfather bought the domaine which is now run by Maurice’s wife Laurence, the first female winemaker in Bandol, and their son Nicolas.
I came across their rosé while judging gold medal winners at the Decanter World Wine Awards. When we traced the family we were surprised to...

Domaine des Espiers, Cotes du Rhone, 2023
A blend of three varieties grown in a single 4.5 hectare plot, organically cultivated since 1996, 60% Grenache and 20% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, fermented in concrete. “Vin Biologique et Nature” it says on the back label, emphasising Philippe Cartoux’s commitment to organics and reducing sulphur in his wines. This has a lustrous, ruby red hue; offers a scent of crushed red fruit and roses; and then delivers a joyous and juicy mouthful of raspberry, mulberry and damson flavours....

Eight Gates, Syrah, Polkadraai Hills, 2024
This wine is made in miniscule quantities – just 54 18kg boxes of grapes were picked, all in one March morning. The vineyard itself – known as Jacob’s Ladder for its steep slopes- is on the Karibib Farm in the Polkadraai Hills Ward just outside Stellenbosch. The area is well known for its decomposed granite soils which are perfect for Syrah – just as they are in the Northern Rhone. Famous names such as Reyneke and Carinus source their Syrah here, as well as several young garagiste...

Shiraz / Syrah
Powerful, black-fruited, often aged in oak, syrah/Shiraz comes in varying styles but at the top (such as Hermitage) can be spectacular and very long-lived.
There is no question that Syrah is now the most fashionable red grape for new plantings in many New World countries, especially South Africa and Chile.

Wickhams Road, Pinot Noir, Yarra Valley, 2023
Scent of dark plums, but in the mouth it’s all red fruits; cherries, raspberries, even a hint of cranberry, This is fresh and lively - there’s almost a crunch to it - but with an appealing savoury note too. Minimal tannin. It’s like a very approachable village Burgundy from a cool vintage. And it would drink really well with offal - liver, kidneys, sweetbreads - or light dishes dominated by mushrooms.
