Chateau de la Liquiere, Faugeres Rouge, 2022

One of the richest of any braised game dishes, Jugged Hare needs a wine that can stand up for itself. An old fashioned claret feels, well, old fashioned so why not head to Faugères, home of some of the Languedoc’s most elegant reds. This is consistently one of our most undervalued wines. Made from unoaked Carignan, Grenache and Syrah, it is powerful and ripe with deep, blackberry and violet fruit alongside hints of rosemary and black olive. Supple tannins and a lifted freshness complete the picture. Now-2028

La Liquiere is among the finest estates in Faugères. Vidals have lived in the village of Cabrerolles in the very north of the appellation since the seventeenth century, but the estate was really founded by François’s grandfather, who was one of the most vocal lobbyists for the creation of the Faugères appellation – which occurred in 1982. 

The family have 60 hectares, largely at 300m. of altitude on the schistous slopes which precede the massif to the north. Their wines reflect their situation, showing a natural concentration from very low yields (averaging just 25 hectolitre per hectare) across stony vineyards of largely bush vines; and an elegance which derives from the cooler breezes in the hills.
