Koelfontein

Ceres

I discovered the Koelfontein Chardonnay a couple of years ago by ordering a delicious bottle on the terrace of The Tulbagh hotel.

I had never heard of it – nor indeed any wine estate in Ceres, which is much better known as a fruit growing centre. The Conradie family, the seventh generation farmers who own Koelfontein, have abundant orchards, but they also own the...

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Koelfontein Chardonnay, Ceres, 2021

From a block planted in 1987, and about 1/3 matured in new barrels, 2/3 second fill, crafted by John Thorne Seccombe (from Thorne and Daughter’s Wines based at Botrivier) at Gabrielskloof. Buttery aroma. Fresh and lemony with ripe melon, well-knit, with notes of oatmeal and nuts. A sort of Cape Meursault? Delivers so much  for the price. Now-2025

We discovered the Koelfontein Chardonnay about five years ago by ordering a delicious bottle on the terrace of The Tulbagh hotel. I had never heard of it - nor indeed any wine estate in Ceres, which is much better known as a fruit growing centre. The Conradie family, the seventh generation farmers who own Koelfontein, have abundant orchards, but they also own the only vineyard in the Ceres Plateau district, just six hectares split between Chardonnay and Shiraz on the steep, south facing slopes of the Gydo pass just north of Prince Albert Hamlet.

Lauren's choice to drink at home: "As white Burgundy prices soar, I find myself looking to the new world for my oaked Chardonnay fix. With autumn's arrival, I look forward to enjoying this with a creamy chicken pie".

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
