The Burgundy Pyramid

Making sense of the complexity of the complexity of Burgundy isn’t easy.

Though Burgundy only comprises 5% of France’s vineyard area, it holds 100 different Appellations, 25% of the entire French total.  There are no less than 5,000 growers, 85% of whom own less than 10 hectares, and four fifths of them make wine.

Domaine Faiveley, Corton, Clos des Cortons Faiveley, Grand Cru, 2020

From a 3 hectare vineyard at the Ladoix end of the hill wholly owned by the family since 1874. The family call it their flagship wine, although it’s more modestly priced than the Grand Crus of the Côte de Nuits. Deeply coloured, almost opaque. Intense nose of black forest fruit. Great depth of flavour, well integrated tannins and a long, long length- a keeper. 2027-2035+

"The grapes are vinified partly as whole clusters and punched down each day before ageing for 18 months in cask (half new). Despite the fairly aggressive vinification, the wine has an enchantingly lovely, forward fruit character and a delightful, silky approachability. From my experience, this will continue to improve for decades. The Clos des Cortons Faiveley has been a monopole of the house since 1874. They have 2.77ha planted to Pinot Noir here, north of Renardes in this distinctly separate climat of the lieu-dit Le Rognet. 2025 - 2060" 97/100, Charles Curtis MW, Decanter, November 2021

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
