The Beautiful South: Top 5 Languedoc-Roussillon Wines for 2022

Chateau La Grave, Minervois Blanc Expression, 2021

An aromatic and concentrated white from 60% Macabeu, 30% Vermentino and 10% Marsanne, with wonderful herbal and stone fruit notes. The palate is pleasingly textured and has a little weight. This should be much better known, delivering superb value. Now-2023.

Mas des Brousses, Terrasses du Larzac, 2018

Consistently the most elegant and ageworthy wine in our Languedoc portfolio; distinguished by the high proportion of Mourvèdre (about half, plus Syrah and Grenache). Seductive Mediterranean perfume of garrigue, autumnal fruit and vanilla oak. Super-smooth palate of blackberry tinged with bay leaf and liquorice. Already so sophisticated and will last for years. Clos de L’Amandaie, AOP Grés de Montpellier, Amandaie Rouge, 2018

Only red wine is permitted in the AOP Grés de Montpellier. This is a blend of 33% Grenache 33% Syrah, 25% Carignan and 9% Cinsault. The Syrah spends time in old oak barrels whilst the rest of the blend is left in concrete. Very classic notes of garrigue and red fruit dominate the nose. The Syrah adds a touch of richness and dark fruit on the palate and there is an almost minty freshness on the finish. The tannins are grainy and fine. This would be brilliant with a leg of lamb. Domaine Pegaline, Pin-Sault, Vin de France, 2021

Philippe Martin and Nathalie Héricourt farm a tiny acreage, but in a sweet spot near Claret where, under a typical Pic escarpment, the very low-yielding vines are grown in beds of scree and glacial fragments. All have been farmed organically since 2013 and Philippe and Nathalie are currently in the midst of the certification process. All of their wines are entirely made in tank – no oak contact at all.

The Domaine Pégaline, Pin-sault, Vin de France, 2021 is blend of Cinsault and Pinot Noir, hence the name. Gentle purple. Enticing perfume, combining the bright strawberry of Cinsault with a little Pinot earthiness. Juicy, sappy, light and crunchy, with dancing red-berried fruit, this is a silky beauty. Will make perfect drinking as soon as the weather warms up. Now-2023

Château de la Liquière, Faugères, Amandiers Blanc, 2021

This is from a vineyard planted on some of their highest land about forty years ago; a blend of Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Vermentino and Marsanne. Tasting this was an utter delight. Fragrant and aromatic, there were aromas of lemon verbena and peach on the nose. The palate was mineral and slightly layered. There was real intensity of fruit too. A superb wine. Now-2024
