The Fledge & Co, Calitzdorp
The Fledge (as in a fledgling, soon to fly) is the creation of Leon Coetzee and Margaux Nel. Margaux (and yes, she was named after the wine) is winemaker at her family enterprise, Boplaas in the Klein Karoo, producers of the best South African port styles. Leon is therefore the public face of The Fledge: he is extremely articulate about the couple’s aims and ideals: first, that they are mildly rebellious: "when it’s your nature to go against the grain, when you need to forge a path mostly in the unknown, eschewing common place convention and taking that first defiant flight from the nest"; secondly, that they are trying "to craft wines which are not typically South African nor truly Old World - wines with longevity at super fair value". This is fair: these wines have an old world sense of place, and, with the exception of the Katvis Pinot Noir, low alcohol level for new world wines.
Like many other young winemakers, the couple don’t own any vineyards, but source their grapes widely, benefiting from local knowledge of specific vineyards off the beaten track in Tradouw or Klein Karoo.
