Top Organic Wines from the Languedoc for 2023
Clos de L’Amandaie, AOP Languedoc, Amandaie Blanc, 2020
Full bottle 1,295 g. 80% Grenache Blanc and 20% Roussanne which has spent ten months aged on its lees in concrete, with regular stirring. A catch of warm straw on the nose segues into lemon sponge cake, slightly over-baked, in that delicious dark-golden kind of way. A full-bodied sweep of ripe grapefruit, lemon curd and toast, prickling with green and bitter pops of unripe cardamom seeds, carrot tops, lime pith and cardamom. Very slightly smoky on the finish. Great polished-concrete texture. A beautifully made, winning combination – GV, 16.5/20, Drink 2022-2025, Tamlyn Currin, 14th August 2022, jancisrobinson.com
This is a blend of 80% Grenache Blanc and 20% Roussanne which has spent ten months aged on its lees in concrete, with regular stirring. Complexity and texture; slightly honeyed with delicious stone fruit flavours. There is an almost saline finish, which highlights the minerality running through this wine. Now-2024
Clos de L’Amandaie, Heritage Carignan, IGP Vicomte D’Aumelas, 2020
Only seven producers work in the tiny IGP of Vicomte D’Aumelas. The vineyards lie between the Herault river and the Aumelas hills just to the west of Montpellier. Here Clos de L’Amandaie have a small plot of old vine Carignan which they use to make this wine. The grapes are given a short maceration to create a youthful and approachable style of wine. Vibrant red fruit with a slight rustic note. This is a bright wine that would be perfect with a plate of saucisson. Now-2023
Mas des Brousses, Chasseur des Brousses, IGP Saint-Guilhem-Le-Desert, 2020
This is from organically farmed (and certified) vines up in the wild hills at Puechabon, north-west Montpellier. This is a 50/50 blend of Mourvedre and Merlot. The Mourvedre gives a wonderful meaty quality to the wine with the Merlot giving delicious cherry and plum notes. A taste of the beautiful south and perfect to match with grilled meats. Now-2025
Domaine Pegaline, Pic Saint-Loup, Pegaline, 2020
60% Syrah, 23% Mourvedre and 17% Grenache, a quintessential red from Pic Saint-Loup. Melange of red and black fruit with pepper and garrigue notes. Umani, savoury notes with medium tannins, double decant. Would be perfect with beef casserole. Youthful - best decanted. Now-2026
