Domaine du Grand Arc

Corbieres, France

Nicolas Schenk is now running the family estate created by his father Bruno. Bruno Schenk is still a legend here at SVS.

He was an engineer in Alsace before he came to buy vineyards in the Corbieres in 1995. At first he sent his grapes to the co-operative, but after one frost affected year he decided he had to come out and bottle his own wines to...

Carignan

Carignan is the grape which really distinguishes the red wines of the Languedoc and Roussillon from those of the southern Rhône (in the latter Grenache is ubiquitous and dominant, and Syrah and Mourvèdre are the preferred blending grapes).

It has been a much maligned grape. For example Jancis Robinson’s Oxford Companion to Wine thunders: "Carignan,...

Domaine du Grand Arc, Corbieres Rouge, Reserve Grand Arc, 2018

This is the latest vintage of one of our staples at SVS: about 50% Carignan, with 35% Grenache and 15% Mourvèdre, aged in two to four year old barrels. It;s a splendid robust wine: vivid, inky purple; exhales an expensive perfume of berries and vanilla, and delivers a spicy, red-fruited, lightly savoury mouthful, backed by well-judged fruit tannins. It's as gutsy as a more expensive southern Rhône and as elegant and concentrated as a much more expensive Bordeaux. Now-2024

We have been buying from Grand Arc since 2002: here Nicolas Schenk is now running the family estate created by his father Bruno. The vines lie on classic argilo-calcaire soils, with some sandstone, around Cucugnan, in a valley of the Massif des Corbières in the south of the appellation, overlooked by the amazing hill-top Cathar castles of Quéribus and Peyrepertuse. The family have been following organic principles for 20 years but Nicolas was behind the final push to certification for the 2016 vintage. He has a keen interest in biodynamics and is also continuing his father’s pursuit of minimal intervention, in particular using natural yeasts and only a tiny amount of sulphur at bottling.

SVS is one of the nicest merchants to deal with. Fabulous choices of producer and wines, friendly cheerful service, keen prices and boundless enthusiasm. Top wine critics (eg Jancis Robinson) often rave about the SVS portfolio of wines. Simon and his team also have a 'philanthropic' soft spot for South African wines where the whole wine trade suffered not just an export ban on wine but a domestic one too for a while. You cannot go wrong with any wine in the portfolio. Buy with confidence.

I look to a wine merchant to explore wine regions in person and discover excellent producers. Then of course to put good information on their web site, to provide accessible and friendly advice and to make the buying process easy and reliable. SVS ticks all these boxes. I am a very satisfied customer.
