Domaine d'Elise, Petit Chablis, 2023

We have worked with this domaine for 23 years simply because the quality outstrips so many other wines from the region – and this Petit Chablis shames many ‘actual’ Chablis wines. Vigneron Frédéric Prain owns one block of vineyards, so chalky and stony as to appear like a white beach, on the boundary of the Chablis appellations. Indeed the vines for this Petit Chablis are adjacent to the 1er Cru Côte de Lechet. Forget any Petit prejudices and buy with confidence. Now - 2027

Burgundy

The Burgundy Pyramid

Making sense of the complexity of the complexity of Burgundy isn’t easy.

Though Burgundy only comprises 5% of France’s vineyard area, it holds 100 different Appellations, 25% of the entire French total.  There are no less than 5,000 growers, 85% of whom own less than 10 hectares, and four fifths of them make wine.

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Le Tende, Custoza, 2024

Despite having its DOC since 1971, Custoza is one of the hidden gems of Italian whites. Located between Verona and Lake Garda, it has long been in the shadow of wines such as Soave and Gavi. It deserves much better recognition – especially when made this well. A blend of Garganega, Tocai, Cortese, Trebbianello, this (certified) organic white is fresh, zesty and full of citrus fruit with some mineral notes too. It is fantastic with seafood, lighter pastas and salads. Now-2026

Garganega

Garganega is a white grape variety grown widely in the Veneto region of North East Italy where it is most famous for the production of Soave.

Though it can be inoffensively neutral, it has a distinct pea-pod character, and can deliver considerable weight and character.

Aba de Trasumia, Albarino, Rias Baixas, Spain, 2024

From the tiny Moraima co-operative (just 11 partners and only 11 hectares of vineyards), and part sourced from ancient trellised vines, this is as refreshing as the Atlantic Ocean which laps the Rias Baixas. Ripe lemon and bright apricot come together brilliantly, with a fine vein of acidity. With the merest hint of salinity, this is open and easy to enjoy on any occasion and terrific with a platter of fruits de mer. Now-2027
How Simon found this: "In 2012 I went to Fenavin,...

Borgo Paglianetto, Verdicchio di Matelica, Terravignata, 2024

100% Verdicchio. Seductively open perfume of lime and lemon balm. Citrus freshness, but some substance too. Excellent all-rounder, as good with light dishes as enjoyed on its own. Now-2027
"The 2024 Verdicchio di Matelica Terravignata is wildly fresh, with an invigorating display of lime zest, freshly sliced pears and white smoke. It's silken and round, boasting a stimulatingmix of salty minerals, citrus and tart apple tones over a stream of lively acidity. The 2024...

Fichet, Macon-Burgy, Les 3 Terroirs, 2024

A fantastic unoaked Chardonnay sourced from three vineyards around the village of Viré. We love this wine for its freshness, consistency and value and have shipped every vintage since 2005. 2024 was a slightly cooler summer than 2023 which adds a slightly fresher dimension to this vintage. White peach and orange blossom on the nose followed by lemon and quince with just a hint of crème fraîche. Deservedly one of best selling white Burgundies. Now - 2028

Piekenierskloof, Grenache Blanc, 2024

Piekenierskloof (the name of a ward, the smallest geographical unit in the South African regional classification, as well as the estate owned by two brothers) is fortunate to have a great heritage of old Rhône varieties, red and white. This is from bush vines planted in 1987 on koffieklip and loam; and fermented in old oak vats.
The Piekenierskloof region is located to the north of Swartland on the Cape’s western edge and this family-owned winery dry farms vines at over 700m...

Piekenierskloof

South Africa

For years I had been hearing about Piekenierskloof – not as a wine producer but as a source of grapes for numerous other winemakers, young and old.

I didn’t realise that Piekenierskloof wasn’t just a ward (the smallest geographical unit in the South African regional classification) but one large estate, formerly a...

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
