Amoruccio, Grillo, Sicilia, 2024
Widely planted in Sicily, Grillo retains freshness and lowish alcohol in the Mediterranean heat. Well-textured, lemony freshness and decent follow through. Excellent typicity to this increasingly popular grape.

Michele Biancardi, Solo Fiano, IGT Puglia, 2023
Michele Biancardi organically farms 9ha of vines near Cerignola, in the north-western corner of Puglia. The focus is purely on local grapes and Fiano leads the way for whites. Cerignola is just across the Apennines from Avellino in Campania (home of the most famous Fiano vineyards). It’s an ancient grape, but fickle and low-yielding. Here it’s grown on calcareous soils and absolutely thrives.
Very open and perfumed – stone fruit with a twist of mint. Full flavoured, showing...

Borgo Paglianetto, Verdicchio di Matelica, Terravignata, 2024
100% Verdicchio. Seductively open perfume of lime and lemon balm. Citrus freshness, but some substance too. Excellent all-rounder, as good with light dishes as enjoyed on its own. 12.5%. Now-2027
We first visited Borgo Paglianetto in 2022 in the search for Verdicchio di Matelica. Verdicchio (the grape translates as “the little green one”) from Matelica is generally considered superior to that from the much larger Castelli di Jesi zone: the vines enjoy a cooler, continental...

Corte Mainente, Pigno, Soave Classico, 2024
We like retro, mildly out of fashion styles here. True Soave (as opposed to the watery stuff purveyed by supermarkets) is so good – and in David Mainenti we found a real winner from a lot of tasting at Vinitaly in Verona in 2016. His family own 12 hectares of vines, both near the town (the Cengelle vineyard) and in the Classico hillside sites such as Pigno and Tenda. His wines are winning rave reviews in Italy and here from the UK press and our customers alike. Thanks to his wish to build...

Corte Mainente
Soave, Italy
We have chosen a winner to work with in Soave with young Davide Mainente.
His family own 12 hectares of vines, both near the town (the Cengelle vineyard) and in the Classico hillside sites such as Pigno and Tenda.
His wines are winning rave reviews in Italy and here (Jancis Robinson described his 2017 Cengelle on jancisrobinson.com as "Chock-full of...

Garganega
Garganega is a white grape variety grown widely in the Veneto region of North East Italy where it is most famous for the production of Soave.
Though it can be inoffensively neutral, it has a distinct pea-pod character, and can deliver considerable weight and character.

Le Tende, Custoza, 2024
Despite having its DOC since 1971, Custoza is one of the hidden gems of Italian whites. Located between Verona and Lake Garda, it has long been in the shadow of wines such as Soave and Gavi. It deserves much better recognition – especially when made this well. A blend of Garganega, Tocai, Cortese, Trebbianello, this (certified) organic white is fresh, zesty and full of citrus fruit with some mineral notes too. It is fantastic with seafood, lighter pastas and salads. Now-2026

Parisio, Gavi, 2024
Simon’s long search for a Gavi that offered both typicity and value for money in spades finally ended a couple of years ago when he found a bottle of this white in amongst a wide selection at Vinitaly. Alessandro Parisio’s is the winemaker here – a thoughtful, quietly spoken chap who farms 20ha. of Cortese. 2024 was a cool year in these parts and that’s reflected in a very classically styled Gavi: zesty citrus and grapefruit with crisp acidity and a subtle minerality. Ticks all the...
