Fiorano, Donna Orgilla, Offida Pecorino, 2024

"Scented with lime, fresh herbs, even a little minty. On the palate, all those aromas are expressed with impressive intensity, vibrant and deep. Bone dry with crisp acidity but so much fruit as to be in perfect balance – though may not be suited to anyone who doesn’t like acidity. Long, mouth-watering herbal and citrus aftertaste. A precise wine made by a small, independent winemaker. Really pure and persistent. I started out with a score of 16.5 but the flavour lasted so long, I upped my score. GV" 17/20. The Pecorino grape is an ancient grape of the southern Marche, grown pretty much exclusively there: Offida Pecorino is a DOCG for wines made from Pecorino in this commune in the province of Ascoli Piceno. Decanter magazine described it as “a very on-trend white wine…undoubtedly hip”. That isn’t why we ship it! As Decanter also noted, “Stand-out Pecorinos, such as those from Aurora, Fiorano or Pantaleone need a year or two in bottle to show their best”. This has so much personality: a flagrant herbal scent – sage and mint; and then a generously fruited mouthful of fresh pears and lemon with hints of fennel and menthol. Excellent depth - from six months ageing on the lees - but not in the least heavy.  A lovely white. Now-2027

We started working with Paolo Beretta (formerly a dentist) and Paola Massi (a research pharmacologist) at Fiorano in 2015, with immediate success. Their wines exemplify perfectly the virtues of small-scale - they tend just 10 hectares of vines - organic cultivation. All exhibit an entrancing purity of fruit, and all are bottled with minimal sulphur levels. Paolo and Paola bought the farm in 1991, and consider their grass-covered vineyards, a beautiful amphitheatre, lie in a special spot: about 250-350 metres up on the eastern side of the Apennines, about 15 kms. from the Adriatic, surrounded by their own olive groves, on a mix of clay, limestone and sand.
