Powerful, black-fruited, often aged in oak, syrah/Shiraz comes in varying styles but at the top (such as Hermitage) can be spectacular and very long-lived.
There is no question that Syrah is now the most fashionable red grape for new plantings in many New World countries, especially South Africa and Chile.

Wirra Wirra, Catapult Shiraz, McLaren Vale, 2022
"Greg Trott’s plan to build a trebuchet (a medieval siege engine, though 'catapult' is perhaps easier on the eye, marketing-wise) was only completed after his passing. An homage to his charming eccentricities. As is this wine, though in name only. This has appealing brightness, with red fruits to the fore, and the pleasing balance of a cool vintage. Oak nestles in well, with a 70/30% French/American split, about 20% new. This delivers for quality, character and value." 93 pts, Drink 2023-2030, Marcus Ellis, 17th June 2024, James Halliday
"The name is a reference to the full-sized medieval siege machine built at the winery – a whim of the late Greg Trott, who resurrected Wirra Wirra in the 1960s. Fruit is sourced from the foothills of McLaren Vale and spends 12 months in used French oak. Elegant floral blueberry aromas lead to a juicy palate of blackberries, blueberry and raspberry, with whispers of savoury spice and ripe tannins, all balanced by super freshness." 91 pts, Drink 2024-2030, Julie Sheppard, 6th March 2024, Decanter
