Koelfontein

Ceres

I discovered the Koelfontein Chardonnay a couple of years ago by ordering a delicious bottle on the terrace of The Tulbagh hotel.

I had never heard of it – nor indeed any wine estate in Ceres, which is much better known as a fruit growing centre. The Conradie family, the seventh generation farmers who own Koelfontein, have abundant orchards, but they also own the...

Shiraz / Syrah

Shiraz / Syrah

Powerful, black-fruited, often aged in oak, syrah/Shiraz comes in varying styles but at the top (such as Hermitage) can be spectacular and very long-lived.

There is no question that Syrah is now the most fashionable red grape for new plantings in many New World countries, especially South Africa and Chile.

Koelfontein, Shiraz, Ceres, 2021

This terrific Shiraz, given 20 months in new French barrels, is spectacular and usually gathers a slew of medals in the local wine competions. Youthful purple. Ripe black fruit and coffee aromatics. So bold and vibrant, delivering a gorgeous gush of blackberry and dark plum. Manages the delicate balancing act of being both juicy and oaky at the same time. Nicely ripe tannins. Very long. Cries out for beef or lamb, grilled or roasted. Now-2027

The Conradie family, the seventh generation farmers who own Koelfontein, have abundant orchards, but they also own the only vineyard in the Ceres Plateau district, just six hectares split between Chardonnay and Shiraz on the steep, south facing slopes of the Gydo pass just north of Prince Albert Hamlet.

The family launched their own wine label in 2002. They currently employ Dewaldt Heyns, winemaker at famed Saronsberg in nearby Tulbagh and one of the elected Cape Winemasters Guild, to make these tiny production wines. The style is unabashedly new world, ripe, big and well-oaked: we're pleased to have introduced this duo to the UK market.

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
