Chardonnay
Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Ambriel, Classic Cuvee, NV
An excellent English sparkling wine with plenty of age for under £30 - this is becoming rarer. Ambriel is made from a small, family-owned vineyard (see below) near Pulborough in West Sussex. It's largely on greensand, which warms up earlier in the spring, offering a longer growing season, an advantage in our marginal climate for grape growing. This is blended from 68% Pinot Noir, 31% Chardonnay and 1% Pinot Meunier, based on the 2015 harvest, with reserve wine from 2013 and 2014, given six years on the lees. it makes for a mouthwatering drop, full of crisp red apple and pear flavours. Fine, sherberty mousse. Now-2026
Charles - a former banker - and Wendy - a former barrister - are not like most wealthy English vineyard owners: they are both hands on, Wendy running the vineyard and Charles the cellar, and unpretentious. They do almost everything themselves, keeping costs to a minimum. They planted the vines around their home and all their wine is made from their own grapes. Sustainability is also to the fore: here small really is beautiful.
