The Burgundy Pyramid
Making sense of the complexity of the complexity of Burgundy isn’t easy.
Though Burgundy only comprises 5% of France’s vineyard area, it holds 100 different Appellations, 25% of the entire French total. There are no less than 5,000 growers, 85% of whom own less than 10 hectares, and four fifths of them make wine.
To make matters...

At Stone, Vine & Sun we are so proud to have introduced Thiébault Verdereau’s wines to the UK market.
His is a fascinating story. When his maternal grandfather Raoul Verdereau retired in 1974, his family decided to keep his three hectares of vines but not farm them.
Thiébault, born and raised in Alsace, became a sommelier but...

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.
Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Huber-Verdereau, Auxey-Duresses, Les Ecusseaux, 2022
From a plot on the plain just below the village of Puligny, incorporating some Chardonnay Muscaté. Raised on lees in 500l. 1 year old barrels. Pale gold; expressive and aromatic on the nose; juicy and vibrant fruit with more concentration than the wine above. Ripe but finishes fresh. Now-2026
Certified organic and farmed in conjunction with lunar cycles. From a narrow calcareous strip on the Monthelie border. Barrel-fermented.
"Intense ripe citrus, not just lemon but also grapefruit and clementine, right along the spectrum from tart to ripe, as well as a touch of honey, though less marked than on their Bourgogne Côte d’Or. On the palate, dry, chalky texture complements and refines all that intense fresh fruit and excellent freshness. A well-judged suggestion of oak (creamy, mealy delicate sweet spice) to add another layer and length to a harmonious wine."16.5/20, 2024-2027, Julia Harding MW, www.jancisrobinson.com 19th February 2024
