The Burgundy Pyramid
Making sense of the complexity of the complexity of Burgundy isn’t easy.
Though Burgundy only comprises 5% of France’s vineyard area, it holds 100 different Appellations, 25% of the entire French total. There are no less than 5,000 growers, 85% of whom own less than 10 hectares, and four fifths of them make wine.

Domaine Huber-Verdereau
Meursault, France
At Stone, Vine & Sun we are so proud to have introduced Thiébault Verdereau’s wines to the UK market.
His is a fascinating story. When his maternal grandfather Raoul Verdereau retired in 1974, his family decided to keep his three hectares of vines but not farm them.
Thiébault, born and raised in Alsace, became a sommelier but...

Chardonnay
Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.
Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Huber-Verdereau, Bourgogne Cote D'Or, Pre Aux Dames, 2022
From a plot on the plain just below the village of Puligny, incorporating some Chardonnay Muscaté. Raised on lees in 500l. 1 year old barrels. Pale gold; expressive and aromatic on the nose; juicy and vibrant fruit with excellent concentration. Ripe but finishes fresh. The cellar is on the main road in Meursault - and this tastes like a mini-Meursault. Now-2027
Full bottle 1,245 g. Vines from a parcel just east of Puligny-Montrachet and raised in 1-year-old 500-litre casks from this Meursault domaine. Certified biodynamic (Demeter).
"Glowing gold. Crazy that a wine from the bottom rung of the Côte d’Or costs this much but it’s a very nice wine with the savour of white burgundy and a certain roundness from this ripe vintage. Already approachable and should not disappoint anyone. 16.5/20, Drink 2025-2029" Jancis Robinson MW, jancisrobinson.com, 8th November 2025
