Shiraz / Syrah

Shiraz / Syrah

Powerful, black-fruited, often aged in oak, syrah/Shiraz comes in varying styles but at the top (such as Hermitage) can be spectacular and very long-lived.

There is no question that Syrah is now the most fashionable red grape for new plantings in many New World countries, especially South Africa and Chile.

Domaine Verzier, St Joseph, La Madone 2020

From 50 year old vines around the cellar near a statue of the Madonna. 18 months in demi-muids,
20% new. Absolutely sensational in every way: depth of colour; pure black fruit perfume; energetic briary mid-palate, juicy and alive; satisfying flesh; and finegrained tannins. Already so enjoyable but will keep well. Now-2029

"Tangy and sharp and tamarind-saturated fruit. Syrah on the wild-fruit and fruit-spice side of the spectrum, rather than the animal meat-hide-leather side. But also with a little percussion-triangle ping of cherry candy. A smudgy tang-sweet, herb-stem note of ripe vine tomatoes. The tannins taste and feel as if they're carved from cinnamon bark and allspice berries. And they're lithe, energetic, shaping the fruit from a breath away. Syrah for people who love Sangiovese and Tempranillo." 17/20, 2024-2030, Tamlyn Currin, www.jancisrobinson.com, December 2023

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
