Château Deyrem Valentin, Margaux, 2019
55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot; 15 months in about half new barrels, half first fill: a splendid example from a small estate on deep gravels at Marsac run by Jean Sorge with his two daughters.
With a nose reminiscent of verdant hedgerows, pencil shavings and a hint of green pepper, this is pleasingly classical. Bursting with fresh blackcurrant and satisfyingly dense. The tannins are already integrated making this incredibly approachable now but with age it will develop gracefully. Decant and serve with beef wellington to enjoy an immediate moment of luxury. Now–2028
"The 2019 Deyrem Valentin offers lovely complexity in an understated style that is quite appealing. Dried herbs, leather, cedar, tobacco and menthol grace this aromatic, inviting Margaux. Savory Cabernet aromas and flavors are nicely pushed forward. 92/100", Vinous, January 2022. Now-2030
Cru Bourgeois Deyrem-Valentin, an estate in the north of the commune run by Jean Sorge with his two daughters, isn’t well-known: an annual production of just 6,000 cases is very modest indeed by Bordeaux standards. 50% Merlot, 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, plus 1% each of Petit Verdot and Carmenère, into barrels renewed every three years. We have been following this wine since the 2004 vintage, and while it always delivers value, in top vintages like 2010 (delicious when drunk in the summer of 2023) and 2019 they are not to be missed.
Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.Read More
