Piekenierskloof

South Africa

For years I had been hearing about Piekenierskloof – not as a wine producer but as a source of grapes for numerous other winemakers, young and old.

Piekenierskloof, Stonedance, Hutton Red, Swartland, 2020

A pleasing blend of halves of Shiraz and Grenache, all in barrel, 20% new, named after a type of Cape soil. Brambly aromas with a hint of rosehip. Youthful, cherry-accented fruit, bountiful and juicy. Eminently drinkable on its own. Drink this year.

Hutton is a type of soil in the Cape; usually to be found on the lower slopes and plains. Derived from granite, it's yellowish or rust-coloured, mildly acidic, but has decent structure and water-retaining qualities.

Stonedance is the second label of the Piekenierskloof estate (and their Fairtrade brand), a former co-operative which is enjoying a revival under private ownership and the impressive leadership of Cerina van Niekerk.

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
