Carignan

Carignan is the grape which really distinguishes the red wines of the Languedoc and Roussillon from those of the southern Rhône (in the latter Grenache is ubiquitous and dominant, and Syrah and Mourvèdre are the preferred blending grapes).

It has been a much maligned grape. For example Jancis Robinson’s Oxford Companion to Wine thunders: "Carignan,...

Clos de L’Amandaie, AOP Gres de Montpellier, Amandaie Rouge, 2019

Blend of roughly one-third each of Grenache and Syrah, remainder Carignan and Cinsault.
"Deep crimson and rather heavy Grés de Montpellier bottle. Meaty nose verging on gamey. Lots of interest here! Quite a bit tannin and ambition but a serious red wine for the cellar. Tastes a bit more Syrah than Grenache!" 16+/20, Drink 2024-2029, Jancis Robinson MW, May 2023

Only red wine is permitted in the AOP Grés de Montpellier. This is a blend of about 33% each of Grenache and Syrah, 25% Carignan and 9% Cinsault. The Syrah spends time in old oak barrels whilst the rest of the blend is left in concrete. Terrific this vintage, with great potential for keeping too. Pure, lightly heated red fruits dominate, accented by black olive and liquorice. Supple fruit tannins. Gorgeous, life-giving wine. Now-2026
