Making sense of the complexity of the complexity of Burgundy isn’t easy.
Though Burgundy only comprises 5% of France’s vineyard area, it holds 100 different Appellations, 25% of the entire French total. There are no less than 5,000 growers, 85% of whom own less than 10 hectares, and four fifths of them make wine.

MAGNUM Faiveley, Corton, Clos des Cortons, Grand Cru, 2019
From a 3 hectare vineyard at the Ladoix end of the hill wholly owned by the family since 1874. The family call it their flagship wine, although it's more modestly priced than the Grand Crus of the Côte de Nuits. Deeply coloured, almost opaque. As ever, this sings: it's intense; delivers alluringly pure black cherry and black plum flavours; and has impressive fat. But it's also somehow wilder than the other Grand Crus. Drink 2025-2035
Very dense red purple, lively though, and holds up after the sensuality of Clos de Bèze. Stricter. Darker fruit, very good structure here, fills out the palate, dark raspberry, with slightly more severe tannins. Very good fruit acid balance. This works very well, and has a distinguished future. Lightly saline to finish. 93-96/100, Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com, December 2020
