Top 10 Best South African Red Wines

31st July 2021

If Bordeaux grapes represent the past in the Cape, Rhône varieties are the present and future.

Twenty years ago the great Charles Back at Fairview realised that Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Cinsault, all classic Rhône grapes, were more suited to the Mediterranean climate of most of the Cape than Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot which thrive in the more moderate temperatures of Bordeaux. The Cape has a heritage of Cinsault and Grenache – note the old plantings at Piekenierskloof and Badenhorst. But Syrah/Shiraz is a later arrival; as this grape does not deliver its best from young vines it’s taken time to realise the exciting potential.
