Shiraz / Syrah

Shiraz / Syrah

Powerful, black-fruited, often aged in oak, syrah/Shiraz comes in varying styles but at the top (such as Hermitage) can be spectacular and very long-lived.

There is no question that Syrah is now the most fashionable red grape for new plantings in many New World countries, especially South Africa and Chile.

Alkina, Kin, Shiraz, Barossa, 2023

The cooler 2023 vintage has shaped a wine of restraint and freshness, offering a more medium-weight, elegant take on this classic Australian variety.

Aromatically, it opens with lifted notes of dark rose, violet and a hint of tea leaf, intertwined with subtle liquorice spice. The palate is concentrated, showing layers of purple and black fruits - blackberry, plum and damson - held in check by a fine, mineral backbone. A distinctive schist-derived character runs through the core, bringing structure and quiet power, while tannins remain polished. Now - 2029

"From younger estate plantings including Blocks 23 and 38 and Polygons 10 and 14 – but mainly Block 23, planted in 2017. Each parcel was fermented separately with 30–100% whole bunch, based on differences in geology. Spontaneous ferment and then pressed to large-format oak for maturation. 92% Shiraz, 8% Mataro. 1,500 dozen produced. Deep crimson. Subtle, dusty, concrete-influenced, ie has that dusty/chalky freshness of wines fermented in concrete. Lively and pure in texture, fruit and freshness. 16.5/20" Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com, 3rd October 2024

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
