Talmard, Macon-Uchizy, 2024

This is one of our best-selling wines for a reason – it is consistent year after year and always offers a proper glass of white Burgundy at a very fair price. It’s unoaked but sensitive use of batonnage and malolactic fermentation, mean it has a hint of butter alongside the lemon and apple fruit with very good concentration given the modest 12% alcohol. A winner. Now-2027

The Burgundy Pyramid

Making sense of the complexity of the complexity of Burgundy isn’t easy.

Though Burgundy only comprises 5% of France’s vineyard area, it holds 100 different Appellations, 25% of the entire French total.  There are no less than 5,000 growers, 85% of whom own less than 10 hectares, and four fifths of them make wine.

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Pandolfi Price, Larkun Chardonnay, Valle del Itata, 2022

Currently on offer with 10% off single bottles and 15% off an unmixed case of 12.
"Quite a bit of struck match on the nose – though not excessive. Masses of rich fruit on the palate but not at all heavy. So enjoyable! Really meets every taste bud head on. I don't think I would age it for very long but it's absolutely lovely now. Beautiful precision and balance. I'm so glad someone is bringing this into the UK. Wickhams Road, Chardonnay, Yea Valley, 2023

Like the Yarra, the Yea Valley in Victoria is high and cool. Winemaker Franco D'Anna of Hoddles Creek says this is “made in exactly the same manner as the Estate range”, fermented in older barrels and with “a purity of fruit and a beautiful line of acid”. Melon scented. Linear Chardonnay with a racy edge. Now-2028
“A light, bright, green gold. With its aromas of stone fruits, a touch of grilled nuts and a hint of matchstick, you have to wonder how winemaker Franco...

Domaine des Crets, Macon-Chardonnay, En Bout, 2022

Just arrived! We tasted this with François Lequin (of Domaine Lequin-Colin above) in Paris in May. It’s the top wine from his side hustle in the Mâcon and we were blown away. Handpicked Chardonnay from vines planted on limestone at 300m above sea level overlooking Tournus. Barrel-fermented with 15% new oak. Intense, balanced and long with green apple and crème fraiche notes (the real thing from Normandy rather than the insipid supermarket stuff). This would be super with a traditional...

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
