Huber-Verdereau Red Mixed Six, Burgundy EP 2024
Three bottles of each of the two reds below:
Domaine Huber-Verdereau, Pommard, En Vaumuriens Hauts, 2024
Vaumuriens Hauts is a lieu dit which lies across the road from the smart 1er Cru Rugiens. This comes from five plots all planted between 1949-1979. The exposed nature of the vineyard helped save it from the worst of the frost and mildew. Two barrels were made, one 500l and one 225l, 20% new oak. Darker in profile than the Volnays, black cherry and blackberry, with a little creaminess. There is something brooding in this wine, in a good way. Late 2027-2032
“Wow, the perfume on this wine! It smells of dark-red roses and it smells of cracking a pomegranate open and slowly prising its arils from scarlet husk and creamy bitter pith. But it tastes constrained, as if the long, firm, dark lines of the wine have been drawn through with a ruler and a 9B pencil; the crimson spill of fruit contoured by graphite. Everything, even the Pommard tannins, holding the line. Gorgeous sense of explosive beauty, just, just under control. Peppery finish.” 17/20, Tamlyn Currin, jancisrobinson.com, 22nd January 2026
Domaine Huber-Verdereau, Volnay 1er Cru, Les Fremiets
From a very small parcel of vines planted in 1984 in this sought after 1er Cru, "un terroir très solaire", sheltered and one which attracts the morning sun. The soil is orange here, rich in iron oxide. One 500l. new oak barrel was used along with one three-year-old barrel. Impressive balance and power. A true connoisseur's wine, one that cannot help but put a smile on even the toughest of critics. Late 2027-2034+
"Dusty ground-rose-petals nose. Insistent sweetness of woodland-strawberry fruit. Pellucid and utterly charming. Delicate but somehow brimming over with eagerness, with dusky, musky perfume, with wild cherries. Tannins that feel a little like chestnut skin and moss. A complex, dynamic and incredibly rewarding wine." 17.5/20, Tamlyn Currin, jancisrobinson.com, 22nd January 2026
Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.Read More
