Loire Valley

In early February I undertook our annual visit to the wine fair in Angers, escaping the snow which engulfed much of the UK during that week.

This is the yearly opportunity for the vast majority of vignerons in the Loire valley to show off their latest offerings to the rest of the world. The early season’s weather in 2008 was not kind, with variously frost, hail and torrential...

Francis Blanchet, Pouilly-Fumé, Silice, 2024

From a small block on very flinty soils in the heart of the appellation, this is an intense and ageworthy Loire Sauvignon. The cooler 2024 vintage has given us Sauvignons reminiscent of the past - with classic bite and drive. This has a terrific intensity - with grapefruit, green apple and sherbet flavours. A splendidly long, steely finish, with a sense of minerality, indicates its class. Now-2020

Son Mathieu has now taken over the Blanchet family vineyards. Year in, year out ever since the 2001 vintage the family has given us a wine that is so true to the appellation, and that really displays the illusive suggestion of gunflint, especially after a year or so in bottle. The estate grows 100% Sauvignon Blanc on 9.5 hectares covering Kimeridgian clays, flint and limestone.

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
