Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Black Chalk, Classic, Hampshire, 2022

Black Chalk was launched in 2015 when Jacob Leadley, winemaker at Hattingley Valley, was offered the chance to buy the vineyards that supplied some if the latter's best fruit. He then went full-time at Black Chalk in 2018 and working alongside fellow winemaker Zoë Driver. An evangelist for the old chalk soils of Hampshire, Jacob has quickly built Black Chalk into one of England's most respected sparkling wine producers.

46% Pinot Noir, 42% Chardonnay and 12% Pinot Meunier with just under two years on lees. Softly aromatic with attractive citrus and pastry aromas. Fruit-driven palate with crisp, green apple fruit and chalky minerality. Very precise and focused. This goes superbly with sashimi and other Japanese in food - so well, in fact, that Black Chalk is the no.1 English wine in Japan.

"A blend of 46% Pinot Noir, 42% Chardonnay and 12% Pinot Meunier planted in the Test Valley, Hampshire. From 12 ha on chalk soils. 10% of the base wine spends time in oak barrels and on lees. No malo. TA 9 g/l, pH 2.91, dosage 5.8 g/l. 22 months sur lattes, held six months in bottle after disgorgement before release.

Proper lemon-curd and cream-curd richness, the indolence sharpening the cutting contrast of the tiny bubbles and their seemingly salty hiss and spit and thrilling energy. Pink grapefruit and white chocolate, Turkish delight and blanched almonds – sweetness and charm tucked into practical, comfortable, silhouette-striking, strikingly elegant structure. The Black Chalk Classic is, to me, the Coco Chanel jacket of the sparkling-wine world." Tamlyn Currin, jancisrobinson.com, 24th November 2025

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
