Chateau Courbin Heritage, Graves, 2023
Brothers Franck and Stéphane Courbin farm this 16 ha estate, equally divided between white and red, in Budos, a village about 45km south of Bordeaux within the Graves appellation. This is their best white, a blend of 85% Semillon with 15% Sauvignon Blanc, with a proportion of the blend aged in oak for four months to add some weight and complexity. It is a very serious wine for the price with stone fruit, cream and orange zest notes. Brill with brill as my fishmonger likes to say....

Clotilde Davenne, Bourgogne Aligote 2023
Aligoté is the ‘other’ white grape in Burgundy. In the wrong hands it is best used in a Kir, but top growers like Davenne produce outstanding wines from it, especially in warmer vintages such as this. It is crisp, energetic and vibrant with saline and crushed oyster shell notes alongside zippy lemon fruit. Oysters would be a classic match but it makes a fine partner for smoked salmon too. Chateau Barrejat, Madiran, Tradition, 2022
Madiran has a reputation in some quarters for being old school, dark, tannic and leathery. This blend of local grape Tannat (about 60%) with Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc (20% each) is anything but that: it's beautifully ripe and silky - the best country wine you could imagine. In this sunny vintage it evinces black-fruited aromas followed by a gorgeous mouthful of red and black fruit backed by a weave of supple tannins. The 9mg on the refers to the extremely low dose of sulphites in the wine. This is sourced from Philippe’s vineyards on the better land on the slopes above the village towards Seguret. Largely Grenache but with about 25-30% Syrah, all raised in stainless steel tanks. Sensational perfume - cassis and roses. Delectable, pure and velvety flavours - heated strawberries with freshness and energy. Is this Philippe's best value wine? It's certainly better than many a Châteauneuf-du-Pape....
