Hoddles Creek, Road Block Chardonnay, Yarra Valley, 2021
A new single vineyard wine (just six barrels made), from a block originally planted to Sauvignon Blanc, then pulled out and replanted with the Mendoza clone of Chardonnay. It’s a cool east-facing block, only seeing the morning sun and steep enough to be terraced. The Mendoza clone gives a very forward flavour, with plenty of ripeness and richness even when picked early. This is a different animal to the Estate or Syberia Chardonnays. Some creaminess on the nose, but lovely acidity on the palate. Full-flavoured. Winemaker Franco D'Anna thinks this should age gracefully for 7-10 years. Now-2031
