Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Hoddles Creek, Syberia Chardonnay, Yarra Valley, 2022

From a single vineyard, a high, very cool site (hence the name), planted to five clones, in cleared forest in the Upper Yarra. The vine rows run east west, minimising exposure of the bunches to the sun. The fruit is picked early in the morning, whole bunch pressed to tank, left to settle overnight and then transferred into barrel. Bright colour.  Intense nose which is a little riper than usual.  More generous than usual in this warmer vintage. Finesse and freshness.  Now-2030

“A super bright green gold. Tensile with aromas of just-ripened white peach, lemon verbena, wild honey and some struck match. Just as good on the saline, powerful and beautifully balanced palate. The acidity is spot-on, meaning that, while it’s approachable now, I would give this another two to three years, at least. Excellent. Gold. 97/100”, Philip Rich, James Halliday Wine Companion, 13th February 2025.

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
