Quinta do Convento, Vinho Tinto Reserva, Douro, 2018
This is the first ever vintage of Convento’s Reserva. Made from a 54 year old single vineyard field blend, this is a real ‘wow’ wine. Concentrated, dark and spicy it is starting to develop some savoury meaty flavours alongside the more primary damson and blackberry fruit. The oak comes through on the palate (the wine is aged in new 300 litre barrels) but it adds a silky veneer rather than any vanilla or chocolate notes. Would be excellent with some old Somerset cheddar or classic roast beef. Now – 2029
