Fichet, Macon-Burgy, Les 3 Terroirs, 2023

Olivier Fichet’s unoaked Chardonnay comes from three plots of vines - some very old - in the excellent terroir of the northern Mâconnais near Viré. We have shipped every vintage of this since the 2005, testament to its quality and consistency. There's a charming floral scent to the latest vintage - a hint of blossom.  Lots of ripe citrus flavour. Lightly creamy but also pleasingly fresh. Delicious. Now-2027

Burgundy

The Burgundy Pyramid

Making sense of the complexity of the complexity of Burgundy isn’t easy.

Though Burgundy only comprises 5% of France’s vineyard area, it holds 100 different Appellations, 25% of the entire French total.  There are no less than 5,000 growers, 85% of whom own less than 10 hectares, and four fifths of them make wine.

To make matters...

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Cape Atlantic Sauvignon Blanc, Western Cape, 2024

About two thirds from the young Sauvignon parcels at high altitude Cederberg, plus a third from the Ghost Corner vineyards at Elim near the southernmost tip of Africa – hence the gannet on the label. Juicy citrus and tropical fruit flavours with an underlying note of nettle. A vibrant and precise Sauvignon with a definite stony finish. Now-2026

Cederberg

South Africa

The redoubtable David Nieuwoudt took over the Cederberg estate from his father in 1997.

We first visited David in 2003, when he was in the midst of his planting programme, and have worked with him ever since then.

The Cederberg vineyards here are 1100-1150 metres up in the Cederberg mountains, most of them on dramatic shale slopes. Good natural rainfall,...

Le Tende, Custoza, 2024

Despite having its DOC since 1971, Custoza is one of the hidden gems of Italian whites. Located between Verona and Lake Garda, it has long been in the shadow of wines such as Soave and Gavi. It deserves much better recognition – especially when made this well. A blend of Garganega, Tocai, Cortese, Trebbianello, this (certified) organic white is fresh, zesty and full of citrus fruit with some mineral notes too. It is fantastic with seafood, lighter pastas and salads. 12.5%. Now-2026

Garganega

Garganega is a white grape variety grown widely in the Veneto region of North East Italy where it is most famous for the production of Soave.

Though it can be inoffensively neutral, it has a distinct pea-pod character, and can deliver considerable weight and character.

Consentido, Macabeo, Yecla, 2024

This has rightly become one of our go-to good value whites and it’s again impressive in this latest vintage. Macabeo is the same grape as Viura, the principal ingredient in most white Rioja. Fresh and lively; with mid-palate nougat-like notes of cream and nuts; and kumquats and apricots on the long finish. Classy, interesting, equally good as a light aperitif as with food - and excellent value. Now-2026

Landcraft, Alvarinho, Vinho Branco, DOP Vinho Verde, 2023

The sub region of Monção and Melgaço on the Minho River is where the best Alvarinho in Vinho Verde originates, and the source of these grapes. The vineyard is on southwest slopes, allowing for maximum sunlight exposure and the granite soils deliver impressive intensity. Hand harvested, this is such an aromatic Alvarinho. Long stone fruit notes abound; think apricot and white peach. Eight months on the lees add real weight and a little structure to the palate. A wine made for seafood, for...

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
